Why fees vary
Every event is different. An auctioneer’s fee depends on the date and season, the size and complexity of your event, travel, whether professional bid spotters are included, and how much planning support you want in the months before. Two proposals with the same number can include very different amounts of work.
Compare proposals on what is included and on the results the auctioneer can show, not on the fee alone.
What a professional should bring
A professional benefit auctioneer is more than the voice on stage. A successful event is a year-round effort, and your auctioneer should be a partner and a sounding board throughout. Expect:
- Planning meetings with your team, well before the event
- Help building the run of show so fundraising happens while the room is engaged
- Advice on live auction item selection, sequencing, and values
- Fund-a-Need giving levels based on your event history
- Bid spotter training, or professional spotters
- Guidance on the room: lighting, sound, stage, centerpieces, and bid cards
- A debrief afterward, with the numbers
Questions to ask before you hire
Experience
- How many benefit events have you conducted? How many in the past year?
- What types of organizations have you helped: schools, healthcare, human services, the arts, faith-based groups?
- Have you worked events of our size, format, and venue?
Results
- How many dollars have you helped raise?
- What did comparable clients raise before and after working with you?
- Can you share references from organizations like ours?
Style on stage
- How would you describe your style? Can we watch video of you at a recent event?
- How do you read a room, keep energy up, and handle a quiet moment or a surprise?
- How do you work with our emcee, speakers, and staff?
Preparation and strategy
- What is your process to prepare for our event?
- Do you hold planning meetings with us? How many, and when?
- Will you help with the run of show, item order, and Fund-a-Need levels?
- Do you train our volunteer spotters, or provide your own?
Data
- Do you track results from event to event?
- Will you review our past numbers before setting ask levels?
- Will we get a recap afterward?
Credentials
- Are you BAS certified (Benefit Auctioneer Specialist)?
- Are you licensed and insured where required?
- Have you earned any awards or championship titles?
Terms
- Exactly what is included in the fee? Is travel extra?
- Is it a flat fee, a percentage, or a hybrid? What would it cost in a strong year and in a weak one?
- Is everything in writing?
How to judge value
The real question is not what the auctioneer costs, but what your room raises with them compared to without. The paddle raise is where a professional usually makes the biggest difference, so ask for a clear plan for yours. (How a paddle raise works.)

Common questions
Why don’t benefit auctioneers publish their prices?
Because every event is different. Date, size, travel, spotters, and the amount of planning support all change the scope, so most professionals quote each event individually.
What is BAS certification?
BAS (Benefit Auctioneer Specialist) is a professional designation for auctioneers who have completed specialized training in benefit auctions and nonprofit fundraising. Ask any auctioneer you are considering whether they hold it.
Is a volunteer auctioneer good enough?
For a small, informal event, sometimes. Once your live auction and paddle raise are a meaningful share of revenue, a professional benefit auctioneer usually raises more than they cost.
